Antony Wretham trained in fine art at Liverpool, between 1977 and 1980. He grew up in Newport, South Wales, where the local landmark Twm Barlwm became an early inspiration for a young teenager interested in landscape art. Following his initial training in Liverpool, Antony spent the next five years trying to establish himself as a local artist in West Cheshire and The Wirral. He held one-man exhibitions in Chester, Heswall, Neston and Birkenhead. In 1985 he moved to Richmond in the North Yorkshire Dales and spent two years painting and exhibiting in the Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors. In 1987, disillusioned with Art, Antony gave up painting and took up teaching. His career as a teacher and headteacher led him to work in Carlisle, Nottingham, Rome and Staffordshire. After retiring in 2018, Antony decided to pick up a paint brush again (31 years later).

The vast majority of Antony’s paintings feature semi-abstract close-up landscape designs or distant landscape views with an emphasis on line and colour. Although his paintings are generally non-figurative, he has undertaken many portrait commissions. He paints mainly in oil on canvas, although he will often sketch in water colour or pastel.
